On the prowl

I was on the hunt for the Summer 2014 edition of the LCBOs Food & Drink magazine. What I like about the publication is the cost (free), the gorgeously photographed recipes for food (shrimp stuffed avocado with bacon tomato vinaigrette) and beverage (watermelon cucumber refresher) selections and the menu suggestions. Our Beers & Foods of the World BBQ was a grand success. Now we’re readying for a summer brunch in a few weeks and I’m looking for new and interesting menu selections for a hot Sunday. July 8, 2014 – Survey Says: There’s a Big “O” Gap

In a Toronto Star article today called “Mind the ‘Orgasm Gap’”, a reporter called Francine Koupon (a business writer) wrote about the findings of a “large sex survey”. Like everything else in life, “large” is a matter of personal judgment, depth perception and visual acuity. Having said that, there were some interesting tidbits. Ever since the government declared a ban on chemical pesticides (at least the ones that worked), two things have happened: 1. it’s a daily battle to keep all sorts of noxious weeds from taking over the lawn, and 2. all manner of wild life have not only returned, they’ve flourished in our idyllic back yard where the only predator is the occasional low-flying red-tailed hawk. I’ve already mentioned the flocks of quarrelsome birds making their cases early in the morning. During the rest of the day, we’re treated to swoops of winged creatures in all colours. July 2, 1014 – A reason for everything

You know the old expression, “Everything happens for a reason”? It’s an old expression because it’s true. This evening, I was getting supper ready. The thick strip loins were marinating, I’d sautéed some mushrooms and garlic to go with them. Hub had cut up a ripe papaya and mixed it with fresh blueberries drizzled with honey and lime for dessert. I was running up and downstairs finishing off some ironing (summer cottons and linen are lovely and cool to wear, but look like crap when they’re wrinkled). Just as Hub and I were assembling a lunch of BBQ leftovers, the phone shrilled. A super-cherry high-pitched voice said, “Hi, my name is Amy and I’m thrilled to tell you you’ve won a cruise to Bermuda and…” Of course after I said a few obscenities, I clicked off.It’s the same voice of the con called ‘Carol’ who’s very stern about us taking the proper steps to ensure the safety of our credit rating.
