As if my scattered mind doesn’t have enough to contemplate, I signed up for another excellent online course offered by Future Learn. Digital Storytelling takes students through the why, what and how of using video or other visual media to tell stories. While the focus is on short films, the lessons on what is story, the elements of compelling story and storyboarding apply equally to writing fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Why am I interested? I want to start telling stories, digitally. It’s something new, but not so new. Elementary schools, arts faculties, enlightened correctional institutions and regular folk are using digital storytelling as a medium of expression with visual and audio elements. I couldn’t sleep this morning and of course, found solace on the Internet because it was 4:53 a.m. and far too early for wine. Stumbled across this gem and a handful of other readings. Professor Virgina Rock, my English 101 instructor at York University, introduced our class to this poem, which Eliot calls, “The Burial of the Dead”, which is really doleful. I fact, I think we spent a semester on Eliot’s poems. I’ve always loved that first line, “April is the cruelest month”, but when I recited the poem aloud or remembered the lines in my mind, I never found them ponderous, even though the sentiment is weighty. The last time we’d done the evening out downtown was during the G20 in 2010, when the streets of downtown Toronto were virtually empty and heavily armed police officers were deployed everywhere. It was so quiet, it was eerie. Back then, the headliner in the concert in the Nathan Phillips Square tent was Herbie Hancock. The opening musician for Herbie was a young Australian woman who played a bass that dwarfed her. But man, did she control that instrument. Herbie, on the other hand, seemed to be holding back. Didn’t play his best-known tunes but some new stuff few recognized. Perhaps he was tired. Classes for the Creativ Festival start today. This year, I capitulated to my multitudinous interests and signed up for a Platinum Registration Pass. Over the next four days, I’m scheduled for 10 classes in sewing, knitting, beading, painting & embellishment and wire work. So I’ll come home with my brain bursting with new ideas and inspiration. The big event this year is called “Passion for Fashion”, a gala dinner and fashion show on Saturday night. Yay! A total overload and I’m so anticipating meeting some very interesting instructors and participants.
