Picky, picky

I’ll say it again – I’ve been editing my novel like a fiend. It’s been so damned cold I’ve been doing my daily walks through the aisles of Costco and the Superstore, trying not to look at the items on sale as I pick up rubber gloves and coffee beans. I eavesdrop shamelessly on conversations as I dodge the ankle-biters who swerve from sample table to sample table scarfing up free food. The added benefit is having moments of inspiration. In between, I listen to audiobooks because I don’t have enough time to read. For the last few months, I’ve been reading/listening to the Audible books series written by Diana Gabaldon, starting with Voyager. I’d read the first three books (and they are glorious…

Best of 2014 – trends & books

Let me declare loud and proud – I love books. More to the point, I love reading. I actually have felt the shivers of anxiety when I haven’t had something near to hand to read. That’s why every room in our house has stacks of paperbacks and magazines on footstools and on shelves. In my sewing room, I have Threads Magazines dating back to the 90s when I started my first subscription, and I still take them out to review techniques and get ideas (everything old is new again). I have several cases of books that I’ve managed to cull from my collection but can’t yet bear to part with, even though they’ll go to the library to be resold to another book-lover. Guess…

TED: Lessons learned from 5 million books

I thought things would slow down, but they haven’t. My list of ‘shoulds’ keeps getting longer. However, there some things that I absolutely MUST get done in the next two days. I’ve cut the potatoes to make lots more spud-buds with trailing eyes and they are starting to shrivel badly. I have to get them into the garden fast. But first I have to get out my trusty rototiller and grind up the weeds that have been flourishing becasue I’ve neglected the beds for too long. Damn, but this back to nature thing is a lot of work. There’s a small forest of trees growing between the interlocking bricks on the front steps. Damn maple keys will root anywhere. I sprayed them on Sunday…

From February 23-March 1, 2014 we celebrated (quite quietly, though) Freedom to Read week. National Library Week was April 13-19, 2014. The motto was “Lives change @ your library®”. So very true. But without forward-thinking educators and politicians to approve funding at all levels (who needs books, WTF, who reads anymore, LOL, TTFN) libraries as repositories of knowledge and hubs for community engagement and knowledge-building, are at risk. You simply can’t cuddle a Kindle. I remember when we moved to Beamsville in 1959 or so. Back then, it was a flyspeck village on the flank of Niagara Region (Stoney Creek, Grimsby, Beamsville, Fruitland, Vineland, Jordan, St. Catharines) and known for tender fruit farming, the annual Beamsville Fair and immigrants.
