I can joyfully report that I’ve kick-started work on the second book in the Kenora and Jake series. This one, The Fifth Man, deals with unexpected loss (people, things, confidence), family secrets and self-discovery.
I’ve also learned some new software. Drafts (https://getdrafts.com/index) works across all of my Apple devises and lets me easily record (voice or keyboard) thoughts, inspirations, conversations – the whole gamut. I’ve even started writing a daily journal again, something I haven’t done for decades, when I followed Julia Cameron’s advise about ‘morning pages’.
To fuel that kick, I returned to my Happy Place – Ajijic, Mexico, in February. I’d sit out on the patio after breakfast with my water bottle, computer and hat and do some typing, in between chatting with passersby and staring at Lake Chapala (all in the interests of creativity, doncha know).
It was good to get back in touch with my characters. Kenora is two years older (44). She’s had adventures and success as a private investigator, but she’s getting restless. Work has become more or less routine, but what’s going to happen with her relationship with her boss, Jake Barclay? He’s got his own issues.

But there will be a new cast of misfits getting in the way of our protagonists, along with a mystery man and a clutch of vengeful relatives.
I can’t wait to flesh them out on paper.
